Vocabulary instruction must be guided by an understanding of what words are important to teach and the depth of breadth of that instruction. Certain words are more important than others in spoken and written language. Some vocabulary words require extended instruction while others do not. Understanding how to teach vocabulary words that provide access to many other words is important for English Learners who are acquiring language.
